![]() The Diocese of Ottawa is in the civil provinces of Quebec and Ontario. It was established in 1896 from the northern portion of the Diocese of Ontario. It now consists of 142 congregations organized as 84 parishes.
Bishop Charles Hamilton, who had been Bishop of Niagara for 11 years, was elected its first bishop. The Rev'd Canon Dr. John Chapman was consecrated the ninth Bishop of Ottawa in Christ Church Cathedral on Ascension Day, May 17, 2007. On Easter Day, 1897, Christ Church formally became the cathedral of the diocese. Presbyterians, Roman Catholics and Methodists had already church buildings in Bytown (renamed Ottawa in 1855) when the first Christ Church was constructed in 1833. The present Christ Church built 1872-3 replaced the original building which had been made significantly larger in 1841-3. Christ Church took on its present appearance in 1932 when the old chancel was demolished and the present expanded chancel was built that extended the building to the street line.
