The first St. Matthew's, Timmins was built in 1913 with the first resident clergyman arriving at the end of 1915. In 1926, the church was enlarged by the addition of a chancel, sanctuary and a vestibule.

St. Matthew's Church become inadequate to house the congregation and a new building was constructed, dedicated on November 30, 1947. In 1961, the status of St. Matthew's Church was changed from that of a Pro-Cathedral to the Cathedral Church of the Diocese.
